About Communities In Schools- Charlotte
The mission of Communities In Schools (CIS) is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. An affiliate of the nation's leading dropout prevention network, CIS of Charlotte-Mecklenburg provides case-management services and connects community resources to over 5,800 economically disadvantaged students in 42 Charlotte-Mecklenburg public schools. Another 35,000 students are served annually through school-based programming and volunteer/resource coordination in those same schools. CIS provides a safety net of support for our most vulnerable student populations by addressing the physical, emotional, and academic needs of students. Programming includes school-based dropout prevention (grades PK-12); college access and career readiness; support for teen mothers balancing the challenges of childcare and high school graduation; working with youthful offenders to continue their education; and providing intensive assessment and support to unaccompanied immigrant youth in our district. By forming partnerships with human service agencies, businesses, civic groups, faith communities, and individual volunteers, CIS connects children and families to the relationships and resources they need to be successful in school and in life. Since starting in one school in 1985, today CIS is helping to build a stronger local community where every child is capable of reaching his or her greatest potential. When you think about it, childhood represents such a very short span in any person's lifetime. For our children, often childhood includes coping with very adult-like challenges and issues that no child living in poverty or struggling should have to face. Being able to support our children during the holiday season means that for one day a child and his/her parent(s) can focus on celebrating their child during the holidays and strengthening each other as a family, affording them the hope that comes with feeling special and sharing the joy of the season.
